Vanitas was a type of still life art that flourished in the the Netherlands in the early 17th century. It dwelled on the concepts of the inevivibility of death, and the transience and vanity of earthly achievements and pleasures. Rooted as a potential reaction to the the culture of conspicuous consumption that occured during the period, I suppose that it is only reasonable that it was recently revisited in a gorgeous exhibition at All Visiual Arts.
