Today's discoveries were of the multiple legged nature. I was taking pictures of some of the flowers in the field, and in darted an elusive friend. This was the first hummingbird moth I've seen all year. A handsome fellow.
My husband upped the ante with this fabulous wonder found inching (read: lumbering) across the road. Handsome, terrifying, and completely harmless. He was as long as my hand.
Now I shall inflict upon you a bit of Entomology nerdiness. They are called Hickory Horned Devils, and after burrowing in the ground to pupate, they turn into these lovelies:
The dapper Royal Moth looks like he could pick me up and carry me away. After spending two seasons underground, they live a brief, but gallant two weeks as adults. Hopefully he will come back and visit when it is time. I will make him a top hat.
